For many of the students at Collier Middle School, they can benefit from the hands-on process, experimental nature, and visible results of maker education which is why Ms. Murphy decided to start her Makerspace Lunch Bunch.

Maker education balances exploration and execution of small projects that involve tinkering and fiddling, which often times strengthens the students executive functioning skills and grows into larger projects.

Students bring their lunch to Ms. Murphy’s class and work on their self-identified projects on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “The idea for my class and lunch bunch is a Makerspace with a concentration on STEM problems. As of right now, we have students working on building catapults with Legos, vex robotics, coding, and building using Raspberry Pi, and building a maze for a small animal to run an experiment,” Ms. Murphy stated. “And the excitement is bubbling over,” she continued.
